The First Plastic-Free Sport Sock: A Milestone Made Possible Together
What began as a bold idea at Forebel, creating a sport sock completely free from microplastics, has evolved into a milestone innovation developed together with Boldwill.
Most sports socks today are made largely from synthetic materials such as nylon and elastane, both derived from plastic. Together, we decided to challenge that standard. After three years of research, testing and more than fifty prototypes, we created a design that combines GOTS-certified organic cotton and FSC-certified natural rubber, delivering the same stretch, comfort and breathability. All without a single trace of plastic.
“We just wanted a sock of natural materials. No plastic, no elastane, no nylon.” — Leon Timmermans, Co-owner of Forebel
ONE COLLABORATION, ONE SHARED VISION
This collaboration was born out of a shared vision:
-
Forebel, with over 30 years of craftsmanship in sustainable legwear, developed and perfected the plastic-free material composition.
-
Boldwill, known for its plastic-free and seamless sportswear, contributed deep expertise in sustainable fabrics and design.
Together, we proved that performance and plastic-free can go hand in hand.

A SOCK MADE WITH CARE
Produced in Turkey in a factory with decades of textile experience, the sock is made using undyed organic cotton, a deliberate choice that further reduces environmental impact.
But this is just the beginning. The innovation behind this material blend will inspire future steps toward completely plastic-free sportswear.
